My landlord decided i can no longer have my cats inside. i’m moving them to my grandmothers and i was told that i can’t have my cats inside. One is not really interested in me, but the other is extremely affectionate and can’t stand to not be around me. I’m concerned about them running away. any advice on keeping them around until i can figure something out? i wont be able to see them everyday. is there a way to do this? please help i dont want to lose them.

I understand your fear…I would hate to have my cats outside. Have you talked to your landlord about giving an extension so you can find them a place to stay or get another apartment.

cats stick close to their food, so put them on half rations ( not for the day, but feed them more often in much smaller amounts) outside, they will not get lost.

Have you thought of putting them in a kennel? You won’t have them with you all the time, but they won’t be at your grandmothers, and they won’t run away. I’ve had outdoor cats before, some of them do well, like my boyfriends. His is smarter than any cat I know! On the other hand some cats do poorly outside. Even a cat who has lived outside most of it’s life can get hurt living outside. I had a cat many years ago; (indoor/outdoor) and although it was smart, it got into a fight and was hurt badly. She ended up passing away shortly after. If that can happen to a cat that’s lived outdoors most of it’s life, there’s a big chance that could happen to a cat that’s outside for the first time in its life. Every cat handles becoming an outdoor cat differently. Personally, I don’t like taking the chance.

This is tricky to answer so I’ll tell you what happened with me.
When I moved to a house out in the country my cat decided it was more fun to be outside chasing mice (it was summer). She always came to the porch to eat but then left again. She was fixed so I wasn’t worried about her getting pregnant, but I didn’t foresee all the strays coming around to get at her food and eventually chase her off. Once she got a taste of the wild, she was miserable indoors but all the strays were used to being in survival mode and wanted to tear into her if she came near, even after I removed the food! She ran off and I haven’t seen her in three months.
Also, if your grandmother lives close to the road there is a good chance they will eventually be hit. Please take this into consideration and do what is best for them. Maybe your grandmother will become attached and let them inside!
