I am planning on moving to New York City at the end of next year which by then I will have my bachelors degree of Fashion Design. I have visited NYC for couple of times and loved it. I know the cost of living is very high there. How can I calculate the cost of living in NYC so I can prepare myself before I make the move. Thank you for you advice!
As a Native New Yorker here is some advice. First you should see how much apartments are renting for first. They range from 2k+ easily, I would research what area you would like to live in and figure out how much you can afford. Rents go up drastically so you should start looking around 3-4 months before your move. Subways are relatively cheap (75 per month), utilities $100-300 per month. There are alternative places to live outside NYC where you get a better bang for your buck.

2010 Feb 17 4You will need a ton of cash in the beginning. After you have settled in and made friends, you will find out where to go for what. You will soon find out that many items will not cost that much more, in fact some you may find cheaper than anywhere else!

2010 Feb 17 5Wow, living out the dream of living in NYC. Nice! Well, I think you should talk to someone who lives in NYC and find out the prices, go online and check apartment prices, talk to a realtor, figure out if you should bring all your furniture with you or buy a new set there, and definitely start saving money!

2010 Feb 17 6Please do your homework on the different neighborhoods on where you might want to live. The outer bouroghs are sometimes less expensive. Please do not choose an apartment from Craig’s List. I’ve had many friends that have tried that and it always turned into a nightmare. Rent’s now can start from $1000 a month for a studio, in Manhattan it is probably twice that amount. Make sure you have a job set up also. It is really hard sometimes to find work unless you want to be a waitress or something. As far as the Design field even with a BA you will start at the bottom unless you have a great amount of experience. I wish you the best, just use your wisdom and if an offer seems to good to be true then it probably is.

2010 Feb 17 8You have picked a decent time to move here! I live just outside the city, but spend a lot of time in it, and lived there for many years. Crime rates seem to be down, but housing prices are SKY HIGH. You can cut down on costs by walking, using mass transportation. You will not necessarily need a car. Try to find a suitable neighborhood with low housing costs. Maybe moving outside of Manhattan and commuting in would be good
Try to find places you like to eat that aren’t to expensive and get a sort of routine down. You also want to know where you are in the city at all times, in case you need to cross town fast or something. Study the map for a few minutes and you’ll get it. And remember, if the streets have names, your in the villlage. Learn the subway system, know all the sides of the park. Be alert, have fun, and enjoy the greatest city in the world!
