We are moving house for the first time and I haven’t got a clue where to start with the organising and planning involved.
Any hints or tips?!
A FRESH START – HOW LOVELY
1. get a move in date
2. organise a van hire or removal company (shop around/ring around for quotes)
3. start boxing up items that you wont use over the next couple of days / nights (get free boxes for super markets, etc)
4. label all the boxes with titles that let you know whats inside – it will help once your in the new place
5. ring gas, electric, water, phone, tv companies to ensure you are switched on when you move in – some companies allow the accounts to move with you
6. day or couple of days before – box everything else
7. on the day – send the big stuff – furniture first
8. arrange as they arrive – the main thing is somewhere to sit, eat and sleep – everything else can wait
9. unload important items – food and drinks, stuff for the kids, etc
10. sit and have a brew and argue over who gets what room
11. include the kids – get them to pick where they want bed extra – if they are old enough ltheirem unpack thier own stuff
12. unpack just what you need for the first day then open the rest when you have time
THE MAIN THING IS – BE ORGANISED AND INVOLVE EVERYONE – the more hands on deck the better, but remember helpers need a leader so enjoy it.

2009 Dec 24 1Only take the necessities, everything else either donate or garage sale them away. It is easier and cheaper to move with a lighter load, than to move all the boxes and unneeded "stuff" to your new home.

2009 Dec 24 4yeah first of all if its the packing get the children to sort out everything they do and don’t want this way there is less clutter and puts some of the stress off moving, if you get the key to your new house and don’t have to move from your old house get the basics sorted first (it won’t take long) just like cutlery and bedding etc and if it isn’t furnished get some kind of seating down whether it be the deck chairs and as this will only take a day you can start moving the rest of it in afterwards
just make sure you have sorted out what room is which and who goes where, this way they can put their stuff in their room so its not all cluttered in one room and then when you are ready start unpacking the necessaries before woorying about the stuff that aren’t important and once you are a bit more settled you can unpack the rest

2009 Dec 24 5hire movers if at all possible.
if not, go through everything and decide what to toss, donate, sell, or keep. once that’s cleared, try to figure out where you’ll get boxes, packing material, etc. put all similar things together, like all wall hangings, all lamps, all mattresses, etc so you can pack or wrap them together. Start with one room and go from there. leave beds, a couple of towels, some clothing, something for the kids and kitchen things for last, as it will take a day or two to pack everything. Label every box so you’ll know what’s what.
good luck, I’ve gone with movers my last 7 moves and couldn’t do it myself now

2009 Dec 24 8If the kids are old enough to help, then make them help. If they are too young to help, then ask a friend or family member to babysit while you pack.
Start packing a few days before the move. Pack anything you can live without for a while, such as extra kids toys, dishes you don’t need, etc. Pack a suitcase with a week’s worth of clothes and toiletries as though you are going on a week-long vacation. Then you can live out of this suitcase and pack everything else.
Get paper plates, plastic silverware, and plastic cups. Also, plan some easy meals that you can just throw in the microwave or oven (or plan on ordering meals like pizza or take-out). By using disposable dishes and planning easy no-prep meals, you can start packing the kitchen.
You can start packing things like bookcases, TVs etc. I would leave at least one radio out so you can listen to some music while you pack, and make sure you have a few comfortable places to sit since you’ll need a break. I would also leave one computer with internet access hooked up for now, you’ll find plenty of reasons to go online as you go through this process.
Make sure you set up mail forwarding with the post office. This will make sure that all your mail gets to the new address while you take the time to distribute the new address to everybody that needs it.
Also, figure out transportation. If its a local move, you might be able to borrow trucks and utility trailers from friends and family. If that’s not an option, then make a reservation for a moving truck. Start calling everyone you know and asking for help with moving boxes and furniture. On the day of the big move, the simplest thing to do is to just order pizza for everyone and have paper plates available. This way everyone stays fed without worrying about which dishes are already packed.
Good luck.

2009 Dec 24 9Start packing everything that you don’t need everyday. You want enough plates, knives, forks, cooking equipment for daily meals. The rest can be packed.
Sort out anything that you have not used within the last 6 months. Not used it?, either bin or give it to charity or even have a car boot sale.
Same with children’s toys, charity or bin/sale.
Label all boxes with what is in them and what room they are going into. Make the one with the kettle ,tea, milk, etc really visible by sticking something bright on it.
On the night before you move. Disconnect all appliances, telly, washer, cooker etc, so everything is ready to be loaded.
It is not difficult moving, just be organised. Empty a room and then close the door. You now know that room is packed and gone.
Good luck.
