What are your tips for moving out of home?

I would love to hear your practical tips for moving out of home/living out of home for the first time. Any aspect of it.
I’m writing some articles about it and I’d like your input.

Make sure you have at least two month’s rent in your account- just in case.
Shop around at thrift stores or garage sales for furniture/appliances for the home.
Try to get into the habit of cleaning your place regularly: I.e. Every Thursday morning.. Etc.
Invite family over to see your new place!
Remember that when grocery shopping, you’re only shopping for one (I made this mistake- I lived in a family of 7 and moved out at 18 and bought two gallons of milk, a family size ketchup and three dozen eggs among other things, haha!)
Don’t move out of your parents on a bad note. I did and that’s the one thing in life that I regret.

Is there a way to cure being home sick without moving back home?

I think surrounding yourself with things that remind you of home can help but maybe make it worse. I suggest setting aside at least one time a month that you can maybe visit home…or every 3 months or something! That way you know that you will be going home soon. Gives you something to look forward too & knowing your going home for a visit can really ease your mind

I am moving home does anyone know a GOOD man with a van company?

Hi I’m moving home but I can’t drive and don’t really have anyone I can ask to help so I need a man with a van kind of thing, can anyone recommend any companies that do this in Scotland? Also am I right in thinking that the man will help me carry my stuff? If the answer is yes do I have to pay extra for this service?

I would suggest that you check out http://www.van-man-removals.com/ they are based in Edinburgh (you didn’t say where in scotland you were based), they are a very reliable company. The man will help you and that’s included with the price however if you need more than one person then it will cost you a bit extra.

Yahoo Answers is the public, not yahoo.
Yahoo mail is web based and isnt affected if you move
Any .com email is web based

If it was a .net address, this is dependent on your internet service provider and will delete when they disconnect your service. In that case, it isnt Yahoo that you speak to, but rather your internet service provider, such as AT& T
Look in the phone book under ATT DSL service ( or cable )

How do I deal with the stress of moving away from home?

It sounds silly but I am a 21 year old college graduate and professional chef by trade. I work 2 jobs and am barely at home as it is, why am I stressing out so badly about moving out? I’m moving into a townhouse less than 3 miles away with my best friend. My parents are having a fit, my mom has cried twice already. The stress of it all is making me ill, how do I make this transaction as smooth as possible for them and keep myself from loosing my cool?

Your mom is losing her little baby. You are cutting the apron strings and at 21 years of age should be able to. What’s happening though is that you are taking on your mom’s problems as well as your own. You need to discuss with her and tell her that she isn’t losing you, and that her distress is making it harder for you. Reassure her that of course you will visit, but that you need her support at the moment and that leaving the nest doesn’t mean the end of family. Tell her that you are who she brought you up to be and that you are grateful that you turned out to be independent, but the only way of showing that independence is to stick to your guns and realize that you are entitled to move out. She will get over it, but it’s not fair that she is demonstrating such emotional power over you. If you let her do this now, she will do it later when you choose your future husband, when you have kids, when you make any major decisions in your life.

I’m considering moving out. I went away for school last year, hated nearly everything about it, and came home to go to school. The one thing I did enjoy was living on my own.
I’m 19, I have a part time job, I’m not moving in with the boyfriend or the best friend, and my parents have offered to help me a little (not in a kick-me-out way, but in a if-thats-what-you-want way).

What things are there to consider in moving out?

food
utilities
phone
cable
if you think you can afford it on a part time job, more power to you.

Will people think I’m an unemployed bum who’s stealing their taxes?

I’m 22 and want to move home very soon. I’m either going to get an apprenticeship or go to University. I’m also going to quit my horrible job. I have saved enough to pay my parents rent for 4 years. Do you think it’s wise to use my saving to invest in education?

Well those are pros and cons that you obviously have to weigh yourself. It’s a pretty subjective experience so I don’t think our input can be of much use.

I moved back home when I was 21 (and actually for a two month stint when I was 25… which was less than impressive), but it was solely to save money and do something with my life. Back then I left like a loser for sure, and there was alot of social pressure that convinced me of that. In retrospect it was one of the best decisions I have ever made becuase it enabled me to save enough money to do go to school to do what I loved best. Now I’m taking my masters in the subject I am passionate about and it’s hard to imagine that happening had I not moved home for a couple years. So…. long story short, I certainly don’t think you’re a loser for moving back home as long as you do something with your life.

How do you transport fish when moving home?

My family are thinking of moving 3 hours + away from were we currently live. Can fish actually survive that long in a bag? I was thinking of getting a polystyrene box to put the bags into to soften the vibrations of the car ride. I’m worried if this move does happen because Ive not had my fish for long.

Double bag the fish. Use a lot of water, and put water in both bags. Then put the whole thing in a clean bucket. Keep the bucket/bags out of the sun and away from the AC vent. On the floor in the backseat works well. Then hurry.

How to calm down fears of moving home and finding a new job?

My husband and I are considering moving back home but there isn’t much factory work but the area is better. I’m really worried that my husband won’t be able to find a good paying job- what can I do to prevent this and ensure he’ll find something decent?

Maybe he should try to find a job before he leaves. If he doesn’t find anything good, then stay where you are. My family has had personal experience with this. They moved to another state and had great financial difficulty. We had to move back. Now, I learned I wouldn’t move anywhere without a job first.

Question on overseas corporate profits and the supposed travails of moving them home?

I have heard of ‘corporate tax holidays’ where corporations have a period to move overseas profits back home when corporate profits are taxed at 5% or something. I have several questions about this.
Aren’t US corporations already taxed on their worldwide profits?
Aren’t profits what the corporation hasn’t already reinvested?
If US corporations are reinvesting overseas instead of taking profit, wouldn’t they have the same incentive to simply reinvest here?
If not; how would tax holidays give them such an incentive?
Can corporations move capital across national borders anyway?
Is it really just about shareholders getting bigger financial rewards?

Corporations are taxed overseas on overseas profits. Then they are taxed again in the US if they repatriate those profits. So, the incentive is to invest the profits overseas. This is one of the reasons why growth overseas is moving along so nicely while the US economy is stagnant.
