For example car transport, removalist costs set up for rental property, and costs for school. Also does anyone know if you have to change the rego on your car straight away or do you do that once your rego expires??

Hi

I moved from NSW to QLD about 6 years ago. A lot has changed in that time, but I will help out with what I know.

For removalists costs, we looked around and found a truck driver who advertised removals on back journeys. Basically for a truckie, the return journey makes him no journey, so they will often do removals work on the back run. We had to do all the labour (ie loading and unloading), but I think we saved over $1000 doing it this way. Look in your local papers etc.

Rent – from what I can tell Brisbane is on par with many regional areas in NSW for rent. Have a look on realestate.com.au for properties.

Rego – we had a car that had just passed rego in NSW before we moved so we thought it would be a piece of cake changing over. WRONG. We had to get a safety certificate from a mechanic before we could change over. We got faulted for the simplest and ridiculous things such as one of our windscreen wiper water jets was aimed too high at the windscreen (all it took for us to fix was to put a pin in it and move it!!!!). And we had had to pay this guy over $100 before he started to do this dodgy inspection. We put it down to the fact that because they don’t do vehicle inspections for rego up here the mechanics see the opportunity to rip people off. So be warned.

We ended up driving our car around on NSW rego without a hassle till we sold it several months later. I don’t think you would have too many problems with waiting till it expires.

I don’t know about school as I don’t have kids.

Good luck with the move. QLD has a lot to offer :)

I am moving from my home country to another country, for reasons beyond my control. I’m very unhappy about it, but I’m trying to look for the opportunities in this move. I would like to find a book that tells a story I can relate to, and then maybe this will help me cope better. Preferrably, I would like a book where the main character ends up being happy in the new location.

I’m not sure what age-level you prefer; however, I found some YA Fiction:

*A Step From Heaven by An Na:
This book spans Young Ju’s life from four years of age right up to college. It is a story about discovery and endurance. When Young Ju is told her family is moving from Korea, she thinks they are going to heaven. Instead, she is thrust into a foreign country, America. It is as much a story about moving away as it is about clashing cultures and the pain of fitting in. Astounding work!

*The Watsons Go To Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis:
This is not exactly moving to another country, but rather another state. Kenny Watson is a hard-working student from Flint, Michigan, unlike his troublemaker of a brother, Byron. When Byron goes too far, Mr and Mrs. Watson decide to take the whole family to their maternal grandmother in Birmingham, Alabama. Read to find out what happens! I enjoyed it!

*Fresh Off the Boat by Melissa de la Cruz
Vicenza Arambullo (14) has recently moved to San Francisco. Back home, she had countless luxuries and lived a wonderful life. Suddenly, her parents decide to move to America and Vicenza’s life is turned upside down. After the move, she finds herself alienated from those around her, trying very hard to fit in. Read to find out what happens!

The following book has just a tad bit about moving away:

*The Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett:
Sara Crewe’s father sends her to an England boarding school from India. There, she is treated like royalty by the headmistress because her father is so rich. When Sara’s father dies, all of her money is lost; Mrs. Minchin has no reason now to treat Sara well. Instead, she neglects Sara and uses her as a maid. A beatiful story about loss, courage and life.

I wish you the best of luck!

having a party soon before we leave so we’v got to have certain things, what would you pack two weeks before moving house???

First I pack everything that I will not be needing into totes: such as books, all clothes (except what you will be wearing for 1 week, its easier this way), all movies, all bathroom stuff and cleaning stuff (except what you will be using for the last week), and make sure all your utilities are covered! Basically make sure all your mail is forwarded to a new mailbox! A few days before you move, pack your kitchen and only leaving what you NEED out. On the last day, you should be all set and only having to pack whats left, which should be basically very little!!

I moved from east coast to california in 2006 but i did not move my household stuff till 2007. I moved my stuff in 2007 that was around $5000. Can I still deduct my expenses though I filed last year that i moved from east coast but did not show any moving expenses. How can i file moving deduction this year because I am filing only one state this year?

well its easier then you think and yes you can deduct the expense this year for last year. in any case you can read a great manual on tax deduction on movingcollege.org just click moving resources and download the IRS manual.

Good luck,
Nick,

We’re moving from Adelaide to Brisbane. What removalist companies would you recommend and what are some of your moving experiences?

one that has a good name check with the department of fair trading

make sure they are licensed

make sure they carry insurance
